Sri Lanka is bouncing back from civil strife, tsunamis, travel warnings alerts and - most recently - with the change of a new Government, where many thought was impossible. Is it a good sign for a peaceful holiday at least for the moment? seemingly so… Small Luxury Hotels and Boutique hotels in Sri Lanka are opening, Villas are filling up the southern coast, while the east coast is opening up to new projects. From the Tea Country to the Southern coast, from the North and Northeast to the Cultural Triangle many things are changing; little small cafés pop up in Galle Fort…The whole ambiance is changing, on the beach and on the tourist trail that leads to tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth, and the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the Kingdom of Kashyapa’s Sigiriya rock fortress, while keeping at the same time the genuinity and simplicity of this beautiful Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

The criteria that we used to list them into this category cannot take into consideration all the requirements needed to be defined real "Ecolodges", as per the international standards. In Sri Lanka, still very few accommodations can be considered real Ecolodges or "Eco Accommodation", as they need to meet strict criteria of social and environmental sustainability. Some of them utilise local resources, alternative energy sources, fair labour policies and are actively involved in the development of the surrounding community, but for example do not have a proper waste management system. Anyhow, we have decided to categorise them as Ecolodges or Eco Retreats, because most of them meet more than one of these criteria.

Regarding the Nature Resorts, the list refers to more conventional constructions that are surrounded by nature and cannot be considered real ecolodges, as they all have luxury comforts, such as TV, satellite, A/C etc. Anyway, we have listed them here because the management of these properties are using one or more than one sustainable practices in their hotels, such as: involvement of local communities, development of local organic home gardens, using of alternative energy etc.
